Masterful Masterton - Julia Winward went to London and disappeared for a long time before resurfacing as a disemboweled cadaver floating in the Thames. Her brother Josh decides to head over to London to investigate her death with his girlfriend Nancy.A strange letter from the past, a medium and an old Nursery Rhyme are the starting points for a fantastical journey beyond the Police investigations. Josh and Nancy go from London to, well, London in search of the truth as to what happened to Julia during those missing months. They encounter alternative London and the horrors which exist there in the shape of the Hooded Men.They have one lead in their quest, a man called Frank Mordent, but will they survive and can they get back to their London? What is the secret behind the doorways to the alternative Londons?Masterton has created another masterpiece here and, like other reviewers, I found this book so hard to put down.
Great Fun But Very Silly - First of all, I have to say that for the most part I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The pace was quick and continued for the entire novel. There were no dull moments. This is the first Masterton I have read since I was a kid and I will be reading more from now on.Now to the other side of the proverbial coin. This book won t be for everybody. It is very silly at times (especially the dog s role) and Masterton s parellel worlds do not follow the logic he uses to explain the travelling between them. Slight possible spoilers ahead but not crritical ones:For example, one has to wait a full 24hours before returning through a door to the alternative London, otherwise they will end up in yet another one of an infinite number of alernative Londons. This being the case, how come our heroes find the correct alternative London on first attempt? surely they could have ended up anywhere. So suspend disbelief and just go along for the ride and you may enjoy this as much as I did. I was torn between rating this 3 or 4 stars. It would get 3 stars for the actual quality of the novel but it was so entertaining that I rate it 4 stars.I file Masterton alongside James Herbert under Guilty Pleasures.
Shirley a new fan - I cannot understand why there are so many negative comments for The Doorkeepers, it is the first book I have read by Graham Masterton and I could not put it down, I did not want it to finish. It certainly made you think about things, I rushed to get a few more of his books and I am now reading Edgewise, which is very good. I am fascinated by this Wendigo in the book. If anyone has any recommendations I would be glad to here them
Great horror story. - Graham Masterton at his best. I read this book over 3 days and I got what I expected from a well written horror story. Chills, thrills and fearabound in this story concerning parallel Londons.I was sorry to finish the book and look forward to my next Masterton book.
thoughtful - Although not as hardcore as most of his work, this is a thoughtful foray into the horror / sci fi hybrid. The idea of alternative universes joined through doorways in london is intiguing. the story is well written but i was dissapointed that it wasn t left open for an obvious sequel as the stories behind the alternative londons were interesting and could have been developed further. worth the money - sequel please graham.
